Non-English Language Fonts

SuperMemo does not contain any language fonts. It is a responsibility of the operating system (Palm OS in our case) to provide fonts to applications. If your handheld can display the characters, SuperMemo will display them as well.

As Palm OS does not support Unicode yet (new Palm OS 6 probably will), to enter and display national characters on your handheld (and thus in SuperMemo) you need to download and install a 3rd party language pack tool for the language you need. Usually there are two or more such tools for any language.

Entering & converting on the desktop

If you enter your data directly on your handheld then you will have no problems. However, if you wish to enter your non-English data on your desktop computer and then import them to SuperMemo, you must make sure that both the desktop app you use (e.g. Word, Excel) and the language tool on your handheld use the same coding (or "code page"). If they don't you need to find a convertor that will convert between the two different code pages.

Illegible characters on hi-res displays

If your handheld has a high resolution display, be sure to install both hi-res (320x320) and low-res (160x160) non-English fonts. Current version of SuperMemo uses hi-res fonts in all screens except the Card View and low-res fonts in the Card View. If you do not install the low-res fonts, the Card View will be left with no font to use and will try to use scaled-down hi-res font which will often look illegible.

XML (in preparation)

Data export/import in three formats (Q&A, XML, tab-delimited). Expected Q2 2006. Free for users of SuperMemo for Palm Pilot
