Managing secondary storage
Question
Could you make a video about using secondary storage? I have a large collection of videos and don't want to waste my time on backing up videos that never change. At the same time, I do a lot of editing in the collection. I make some review every day. I need to back it up often. But now it seems impossible due to the size of the collection and the time it takes.
Answer
This video shows a few basic operations that are useful in incremental video when secondary storage is used for the exact same reasons. See it if helps.
The basic operations are:
- importing files to the collection (which you probably already know)
- setting or changing the location of the secondary storage
- moving or backing up secondary storage files
- moving files to secondary storage (option Externalize)

Procedure presented in the video
Collection Videos.kno on drive D: is incomplete. Some videos remain in d:\videos folder and should still be imported. Some videos are in the primary storage in the collection on drive D:. The rest of the videos are in the secondary storage on 1TB drive (H:)
The Goal: place all videos on a 4TB drive (I:) and use them in one integrated collection located on Drive D:
Steps:
- copy secondary storage files from 1TB to 4TB drive (H: -> I:)
- connect videos.kno to the secondary storage on 4TB drive (I:)
- import videos from the d:\videos folder to videos.kno collection (D:)(no extra space needed on drive D: if Delete files after import is checked)
- externalize videos to 4TB (moving files from the primary storage D: to the secondary storage I:)
Important! Many collections can use one secondary storage but only one collection can own it. This means that operations such as import and externalize, must always be done from the managing collection. The other collection must use the storage in read-only mode (e.g. by linking to files)
