"Synchronize element with selection in contents menu" NEEDS to be set to 'ON' by default

You are right. The setting has been inherited from the times when computers were a few orders of magnitude slower and skipping synchronization was the default mode. Today only heavy video elements might need this option.

This weakness is hard to notice as SuperMemo remembers your setting. Once you fix it, you never need to see it again.

NB: browser setting of the same button is always ON (even if you temporarily turn it off)
