Intro
This video illustrates the process of incremental writing.
This text and video are used to explain SuperMemo, a pioneer of spaced repetition software since 1987. For other videos see: SuperMemo Video
Video outline
The incremental writing process:
- writing an outline or outlines
- processing outlines with incremental reading or neural review; reading, learning, writing in a loop
- expanding knowledge with incremental reading or neural review in a separate knowledge collection
- importing snippets worth writing about or snippets that illustrate selected topics (e.g. with extra evidence)
- continual incremental review and incremental writing (in work collection, in learning collections, in To Do branch, or in the main body of text)
- building the structure of the tree
- exporting the outcome (e.g. File : Export : Document) or moving the process to incremental writing environment (e.g. Media Wiki, Substack, Medium, WordPress, etc.)

FAQ
Summary
- 📚 Incremental Writing & Reading: Incremental writing begins with collecting diverse ideas and creating an outline. Incremental reading supports this by breaking down complex information into manageable pieces for organization and coherence.
- 🧩 Outline Creation & Flexible Structure: The writer drafts multiple outlines, organized or not, adding snippets of knowledge randomly without a set sequence, which allows for adaptability and inspiration.
- 🔄 Continuous Reassembly & Elimination of Writer’s Block: By always having material to work with, incremental writing bypasses writer's block. Writers keep reshuffling ideas, so new insights continue to emerge.
- 🌳 Knowledge Tree and Consolidation: Information is structured into a knowledge tree, a hierarchy of branches representing subtopics that are refined and combined into coherent sections or chapters.
- 🔍 Dynamic Editing Process: The editing involves consolidating fragments, linking pieces, and reshaping content based on interest and relevance. This iterative approach builds a big-picture view.
- 💡 Tools & Techniques: Techniques such as neural review and Search&review allow for checking content coherence, finding contradictions, duplicates, and distributing information effectively.
- 🎉 Creative & Randomized Process: With built-in randomness and passion-driven selection, incremental writing encourages creativity and makes the learning-and-writing loop more enjoyable.
The video presents an exemplary collection with 162 elements, showing how snippets of knowledge contribute to a larger piece of writing. There is also a mention of 1,800 elements for a book written in the course of a year, which illustrates the scale of work involved in incremental writing, consolidating a massive amount of information into a coherent whole.
