Does SuperMemo change system clock
Question: Does SuperMemo change the system clock?
About a week ago I bought SuperMemo 2004 and ever since I started using it, I have had problem with my system clock. When I turn off my stationary computer, which has Windows XP Professional installed on it and no other operating systems, and turn the computer back on a couple of hours later, the system clock shows approximately the time when I switched off the machine. At first I didn't suspect SuperMemo. I checked for viruses and spyware, but didn't find any. I installed a brand new CMOS battery, but that didn't help. All my configurations in BIOS stay intact after a shutdown, except the clock. I haven't installed any new programs after SuperMemo and my system clock is not set to synchronize with an Internet time-server. There's a message posted in this forum - message #4024, which claims that SuperMemo 2004 can change the system clock without the consent of the user. Here's a quote:
"I noticed the problem with the current day's repetitions not being imported - annoying! I even tried changing the system clock on either/both devices to see if I could "trick" it, but SM2004 simply decides to reset my system clock to whatever it sees fit. This is NOT COOL. SM should NOT have the ability to change your system clock, at least not without giving you a choice. If you were to open a weird collection file and SM changed the date to something completely off and you forgot to switch it back, that could potentially screw up a LOT of files on your computer outside of SM."
My question is following: Is it true that SuperMemo can change the system clock?
Kindly Fredrik
Answer:
No. SuperMemo does not play with your system clock. Older versions might include optional change to the system date (e.g. when it was reset due to loss of battery power) but these would always require confirmation by the user. Even the calendar on the toolbar has been removed from the program as clock mishaps are more rare.
If the date changes, you will only be warned. For example:
'Warning! Date changed in the system!'
'Warning! This collection has not been used for ...'
Even if the date precedes the beginning of the learning process, SuperMemo will not try to fix it. It will just warn you of the wrong date and quit.
