Question

I have lots of notes from paper journals. For example, I read Newsweek, mark a few paragraphs, read more, mark a few paragraphs many pages later, etc. What would be the best way to use incremental reading for such notes?

Suggestion 1

This is how I process paper notes:

  1. create a dedicated collection (for easy backup - it is of huge size) and a dedicated time slot for processing
  2. very short notes or very important notes, I type by hand, the rest I import as pictures so that I could use prioritization tools in SuperMemo
  3. use a digital camera to quickly snap the pages (a scanner yields better quality but is too slow)
  4. copy the pictures to the hard disk
  5. use File : Import : Files and Folders to import ll pictures at once
  6. use incremental reading to process the picture notes
  7. type the notes incrementally or use OCR on longer texts (typing seems better as I can shorten the texts and give them more meaning, i.e. rework my own way, use only the quintessence)
  8. use Trim on image component to cut the processed portion of the picture, or the line component to cross portions out, or Shift+click to process pictures in MS Paint (e.g. to copy&paste or cross out processed parts)

Important!: before getting down to processing, search the net! Most of noteworthy articles from Newsweek, Time, etc. have already been published online. That saves lots of time.

I have a regular flatbead scanner that is now entirely redundant.

The Scansnap scanner/Finereader package allows you to scan whole books or huge amounts of paper articles/documents - it will scan them in super quick time, and then save them both as searchable PDFs and as word docs/excels files/etc. And it will automatically sort and file them if you want (I don't use this particular feature).

So, typically I scan a book, Scansnap produces one PDF file for the book, as well as a regular text/image Word doc. I then just save the Word file in HTML/XML format (just using the Word 'File' menu/'Save as' option), and load it into Supermemo with the simple Ctrl + A (select all text), Crtl + C (copy), and Ctrl + Alt + N (paste into SM as an article) keyboard shortcuts.

And the good thing is that because Scansnap/Finereader produces *text* docs (rather than just scanned images of text), you can do regular incremental reading/clozes as you would with any text (HTML) article that you downloaded from the web.

The only downside of the Scansnap solution is that I have to rip all the pages out of any paper book that I want to load into Supermemo. This made me hesitate, but I personally thought - '...the books are really redundant (except as a bookshelf ornament!) once you have them in Supermemo for incremental reading, so what the heck'.

I now have considerably fewer paper textbooks, and a considerably larger Supermemo incremental reading workload...
