Can I disable templates?

Question:

Michael asked: I have emailed several times and have still not recieved the infromation that I need to fix my supermemo.

As mentioned in my previous emails:

Everytime I make a clozed deletion from a topic the new element has a template applied. I have been told to read the help pages on templates ( I have ) there was nothing there that I didn't already know. I was also told to use the delete template option from the Right-click menu of the elements. Although that requires me doing that to each and every element where I didn't need to previously.

I would like someone to tell me once and for all how to fix my SuperMemo. I have been using SuperMemo since about 2001 and this is the first time I've had a huge problem. It is too time consuming to have to edit each element.

How can I stop SuperMemo from adding a template to each new element? The template it seems to add to my elements is Item... If that helps. I have tried making new collections, it seems to work for about the first 10 elements and then quits, it starts adding the templates again.

If I am to apply a template what template do I add? Is there a way to disable the templates? Please give my step by step instructions, I have been dealing with this for too long. I am getting backed up in my learning. I take more time editing the elements than learning anything. Thank you

Hints:

When adding elements you need SOME template applied (otherwise your element would be empty). You can check if any of the default templates is useful for your elements. If you need a more complex template, you will, unfortunately, need to define it yourself. If you then save your tempate as default, it will automatically be applied to all newly added items. If you want to turn off the template that is applied to your cloze deletions, you have to turn off Auto-Apply. You can do it in category registry (Search : Categories)

Not sure this is exactly what you need. Please fill in more details, this should be easy to solve ("easy" = few keystrokes, even though, understandably, the keystrokes can be hard to find in the documentation)

Additional information:

Michael: The main problem is the clozed deletion is no longer working. When you Alt + Z on a topic to make a Q&A usually the bottom box will be a small box and the question is a larger box. These boxes you can also Resize without affecting the other elements. Now When I do the clozed deletion the template of Item is being applied and when I resize one window it will resize them all.

I need to be able to resize my windows, I need supermemo to work like it is supposed to where the template that IS applied allows you to resize each window. When I use the delete template option on the elements it works but that requires removing the template on each individual element.

Answer:

To have SuperMemo generate template-less cloze deletions, uncheck Auto-Apply in the category to which parent topics belong (if this is the default category, Search : Categories will open that category)

  • Michael: THANK YOU THANK YOU!! It worked!!

To resize items without affecting other items, impose (or detach) the template before resizing. For example, Ctrl+Shift+F2 seems to be the fastest way.
